Just a midnight rant because my car hasn't been able to pass inspection and it expired in august

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I bought this actron handheld OBDII reader so I can read my own emissions status. The two O2 sensor monitors and the Catalyst monitor is whats throwing me off. I've been going back and fowarth with the guy who dyno tuned my car, trying new tunes to get it to read and it just won't. When I first tried tune #2, it threw a downstream O2 code for one being bad. I put tune #1 one (which has everything turned off) until I replaced them both with brand new NTK's. To make sure it actually worked right I unplugged a downstream O2 and tune #2 threw a CEL within the first mile of driving. After 150 miles, STILL won't read.

Tuner says the EGR (I have it deleted) should come up as "Unsupported" not "NOT READY" like it has been. He sent me tune # 3 which is what I'm running now.

I notice on my actron, EGR comes up as N/A instead of incomplete. I'm not sure why "sec air system" is also incomplete, if I'm right that should be air injection which my car doesn't have, so I'd think that should also be N/A.

He did the tune on my friends car and it just passed NY emissions fine, NY and NJ have the same emissions setup. Hopefully I can get this solved soon....

ARGH!

You could just reinstall the cat and go to emissions, then when you get back just uninstall it. Unless it is just a massive headache, then just try and bribe the dudes.

Have you googled the procedure required to get all the systems to read "ok"? I hear they can be a bit of a bear sometimes.

The only other option I can give is to move. NY/NJ? Aren't there too many people per square mile there anyways?

Disclaimer: I'm no expert.

What your talking about is the drive cycle, where you do a series of specific requirements to force the monitors ready. I haven't had a chance to do this because finding a road around here to do 45mph on totally interrupted is really tough.

Most states around me are all the same emissions wise, PA is the same as us. I think DE isn't as strict but nothing exists in DE except farm land and the guy who tuned my car

I have cats, the computer isn't pulling data from the O2's or something stupid.

I wish it was that simple, NJ emissions is basically you plug in and it goes to the state computer. Before 2009 shops could override failures and pass you. Not anymore!

Yes, drive cycle is the term I was looking for. If it's tough to do a stretch at a continuous 45mph, then I am sorry that I am of no help.
(From MN, and recently drove to the opposite side of MT (roughly 14hr drive time) all while not having to do emissions testing ever.)

what are the car details? Some cars have a drive cycle. I can pull it up in AllData for you if I have this

If it is a 96 Volvo 850 you are in for a hell of a cycle!

Hmm.. (technician, not auto technician)

1. Assuming Tuner guy knows his 02 sensors. Right type. 12v in (heater) at least one signal out. It's not much of a signal in the first place..

2. If you can figure out which wire(s) is the signal, triple-check that from plug to harness. Ideally right at the plug going into the computer.

One is for the 12v heater and could zap your cpu if that is sent along the sensor line.. (it didn't on mine, but I may have just been lucky.)

Look at same components on friends passed car. measure signal at each point.

3. run a wire direct to the two points and see if data shows up.

If so.. check anything repairable on each section (plugs, etc.)

"Hard to find a 45mph road"? Okay, let's stop right there. Move to non-emission state with highways. Problem solved. :P

its an 04 marauder, I have the drive cycle details I just haven't done it yet because the only time I could do it would be like midnight when the roads are totally clear. Otherwise theres to much traffic around to meet some of the requirements.

I can check the voltage on my handheld which I should probably do, but I assume they are on if its able to throw a CEL for one.

Ungh, this is why I had to stop driving my Tiburon, simply could not get it to pass inspection, monitors would simply never set. Sorry to hear you're in the same OBD2 hell, best of luck getting out of it!
